Ruth
Chapter 1
1:1In the time that the Judges ruled, there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem Judah went for to sojourn in the country of Moab, he,and his wife, and his two sons.
1:2And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi:and the names of his two sons, Mahlon, and Chilion--ephrathites of Bethlehem Judah:and when they came into the land of Moab, they continued there.
1:3Then Elimelech the husband of Naomi died, and she remained with her two sons,
1:4Which took them wives of the Moab:the ones name was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth:and they dwelled there about ten years.
1:5And Mahlon and Chilion died also both:so the woman was left destitute of her two sons, and of her husband.
1:6Then she arose with her daughters in law,and returned from the country of Moab:for she had heard say in the country of Moab, that YHWH had visited his people, and given them bread.
1:7Therefore she departed out of the place where she was,and her two daughters in law with her,and they went on their way to return to the land of Judah.
1:8Then Naomi said to her two daughters in law, Go, return each of you to her own mother's house:YHWH do chesed with you, as you have done with the dead, and with me.
1:9YHWH grant you, that you may find rest, either of you in the house of her husband. And when she kissed them, they lifted up their voice and wept.
1:10And they said to her, Surely we will return with you to your people.
1:11But Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters:for what cause will you go with me? Are there any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
1:12Turn again, my daughters:go your way:for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, and if I had a husband this night:yes, if I had born sons,
1:13Would you wait for them, till they were of age? Would you be deferred for them from taking of husbands? No my daughters:for it grieves me much for your sakes that the hand of YHWH is gone out against me.
1:14Then they lifted up their voice and wept again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law,but Ruth abode still with her.
1:15And Naomi said, Behold, your sister in law is gone back to her people and to her gods:return you after your sister in law.
1:16And Ruth answered, Entreat me not to leave you, nor to depart from you:for where you go, I will go:and where you dwell, I will dwell:your people shall be my people, and your Elohim my Elohim.
1:17Where you die, will I die,and there will I be buried. YHWH do so to me and more also, if anything but death separate you and me.
1:18When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left speaking to her.
1:19So they went both until they came to Bethlehem:and when they were come to Bethlehem, it was told of them through all the city, and they said, Is not this Naomi?
1:20And she answered them, Call me not Naomi, but call me Mara:for Shaddai has given me much bitterness.
1:21I went out full, and YHWH has caused me to return empty:why do you call me Naomi, seeing YHWH has humbled me,and Shaddai has brought me to adversity?
1:22So Naomi returned and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, when she came out of the country of Moab:and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
Chapter 2
2:1Then Naomi's husband had a kinsman, one of great power of the family of Elimelech, and his name was Boaz.
2:2And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, I please, Let me go to the field, and gather ears of corn after him, in whose sight I find favor. And she said to her, Go my daughter.
2:3And she went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and it came to pass, that she met with the portion of the field of Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.
2:4And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, YHWH be with you:and they answered him, YHWH bless you.
2:5Then said Boaz to his servant that was appointed over the reapers, Whose maid is this?
2:6And the servant that was appointed over the reapers, answered, and said, It is the Moabite maid, that came with Naomi out of the country of Moab:
2:7And she said to us, I please, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves:so she came, and has continued from that time in the morning to now, save that she stayed a little in the house.
2:8Then said Boaz to Ruth, Hear you, my daughter? Go to none other field to gather, neither go from here:but abide here by my maidens.
2:9Let your eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go after the maidens. Have I not charged the servants, that they touch you not? Moreover when you are a thirst, go to the vessels, and drink of that which the servants have drawn.
2:10Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said to him, How have I found favor in your eyes, that you should know me, seeing I am a stranger?
2:11And Boaz answered, and said to her, All is told and showed me that you have done to your mother-in-law, since the death of your husband, and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land where you were born, and are come to a people who you knew not in time past.
2:12YHWH recompense your work, and a full reward be given you of YHWH Elohim of Israel, under whose wings you are come to trust.
2:13Then she said, Let me find favor in your sight, my lord: for you have comforted me, and spoken to the heart of your maid, though I be not like to one of your maids.
2:14And Boaz said to her, At the meal time come you here, and eat of the bread, and dip your morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers, and he reached her parched grain: and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left of it.
2:15And when she arose to glean, Boaz commanded his servants, saying, Let her gather among the sheaves, and do not rebuke her.
2:16Also let fall some of the sheaves for her,and let it lie, that she may gather it up,and rebuke her not.
2:17So she gleaned in the field until evening, and she beat out that which she had gathered, and it was about an Ephah of barley.
2:18And she took it up,and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gathered:Also she took forth, and gave to her that which she had reserved, when she was sufficed.
2:19Then her mother-in-law said to her, Where have you gleaned today? And where worked you? Blessed be he,that knew you. And she showed her mother-in-law, with whom she had worked, and said, The man's name, with whom I worked today, is Boaz.
2:20And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, Blessed be he of YHWH:for he has not forsaken his chesed toward the living and to the dead. Again Naomi said to her, The man is near to us,and of our affinity.
2:21And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said also certainly to me, You shall be with my servants, until they have ended all my harvest.
2:22And Naomi answered to Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is best, my daughter, that you go out with his maids, that they meet you not in another field.
2:23Then she kept her by the maids of Boaz, to gather to the end of barley harvest, and of wheat harvest, and dwelt with her mother-in-law.
Chapter 3
3:1Afterward Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, My daughter, shall not I seek rest for you, that you may prosper?
3:2Now also is not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maids you were? Behold, he winnowing barley to night in the floor.
3:3Wash yourself therefore, and anoint you,and put your clothing upon you,and go down to the floor:let not the man know of you, until he have left eating and drinking.
3:4And when he shall sleep, mark the place where he lays him down, and go,and uncover the place of his feet, and lay you down, and he shall tell you what you shall do.
3:5And she answered her, All that you tell me, I will do.
3:6So she went down to the floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law told her.
3:7And when Boaz had eaten, and drunken, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain, and she came softly, and uncovered the place of his feet, and lay down.
3:8And at midnight the man was afraid and caught hold:and lo, a woman lay at his feet.
3:9Then he said, Who are you? And she answered, I am Ruth your handmaid:spread therefore the wing of your garment over your handmaid:for you are the kinsman.
3:10Then he said, Blessed be you of YHWH, my daughter:you have showed more chesed in the latter end, than at the beginning, inasmuch as you followed not young men, were they poor or rich.
3:11And now, my daughter, fear not: I will do to you all that you require: for all the gate of my people knows, that you are a virtuous woman.
3:12And now, it is true that I am your kinsman, however there is a kinsman nearer then I.
3:13Stay tonight, and when morning is come, if he will do the duty of a kinsman to you, well, let him do the kinsmans duty:but if he will not do the kinsmans part, then will I do the duty of a kinsman, as YHWH lives:sleep until the morning.
3:14And she lay at his feet until the morning:and she arose before one could know another:for he said, Let no man know, that a woman came into the floor.
3:15Also he said, Bring the sheet that you have upon you,and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid them on her,and she went into the city.
3:16And when she came to her mother-in-law, she said, Who are you, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her,
3:17And said, These six measures of barley gave he me:for he said to me, You shall not come empty to your mother-in-law.
3:18Then said she, My daughter, sit still, until you know how the thing will fall:for the man will not be in rest, until he has finished the matter this same day.
Chapter 4
4:1Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat there, and behold, the kinsman, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by:and he said, Ho, such one, come, sit down here. And he turned, and sat down.
4:2Then he took ten men of the Elders of the city, and said, Sit down here. And they sat down.
4:3And he said to the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, will sell a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech.
4:4And I thought to advertise you, saying, Buy it before the assistants, and before the Elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it:but if you will not redeem it, tell me:for I know that there is none besides you to redeem it,and I am after you. Then he answered, I will redeem it.
4:5Then said Boaz, What day you buy the field of the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it of Ruth the Moabitess the wife of the dead, to stir up the name of the dead, upon his inheritance.
4:6And the kinsman answered, I cannot redeem it,lest I destroy my own inheritance:redeem my right to you,for I cannot redeem it.
4:7Now this was the manner beforetime in Israel, concerning redeeming and changing, for to establish all things:a man did pluck off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor, and this was a sure witness in Israel.
4:8Therefore the kinsman said to Boaz, Buy it for yourself:and he drew off his shoe.
4:9And Boaz said to the Elders and to all the people, You are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's,and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.
4:10And moreover, Ruth the Moabitess the wife of Mahlon, have I bought to be my wife, to stir up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, and that the name of the dead be not put out from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place:you are witnesses this day.
4:11And all the people that were in the gate, and the Elders said, We are witnesses:YHWH make the wife that comes into your house, like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel:and that you may do worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Bethlehem,
4:12And that your house be like the house of Perez ( whom Tamar bore to Judah) of the seed which YHWH shall give you of this young woman.
4:13So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife:and when he went in to her, YHWH gave that she conceived, and bore a son.
4:14And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be YHWH, who has not left you this day without a kinsman, and his name shall be continued in Israel.
4:15And this shall bring your nephesh again, and cherish your old age:for your daughter-in-law which loves you, has born to him,and she is better to you than seven sons.
4:16And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her lap,and became nurse to it.
4:17And the women her neighbors gave it a name, saying, There is a child born to Naomi, and called the name there Obed:the same was the father of Saying, the father of David.
4:18These now are the generations of Perez:Perez begot Hezron,
4:19And Hezron begot Ram,and Ram begot Amminadab,
4:20And Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon,
4:21And Salmon begot Boaz, and Boaz begot Obed,
4:22And Obed begot Ishai, and Ishai begot David.
