Chapter 1

1:1The vision of Obadiah. Thus says Adonai YHWH against Edom, We have heard a report from YHWH,and an ambassador is sent among the heathen:arise, and let us rise up against her to battle.
1:2Behold, I have made you small among the heathen:you are utterly despised.
1:3The pride of your heart has deceived you:you that dwell in the clefts of the rocks, whose habitation is high, that says in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
1:4Though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and make your nest among the stars, from there will I bring you down, saysYHWH.
1:5Came thieves to you or robbers by night? How were you brought to silence? Would they not have stolen, till they had enough? If the grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some grapes?
1:6How are the things of Esau sought up,and his treasures searched?
1:7All the men of your covenant have driven you to the borders: the men that were at peace with you, have deceived you, and prevailed against you: they that eat your bread, have laid a wound under you: there is none understanding in him.
1:8Shall not I in that day, saysYHWH, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding from the mount of Esau?
1:9And your strong men, O Teman, shall be afraid, because every one of the mount of Esau shall be cut off by slaughter.
1:10For your cruelty against your brother Jacob, shame shall cover you,and you shall be cut off forever.
1:11When you stood on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away his substance, and strangers entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even you were as one of them.
1:12But you should not have beholden the day of your brother, in the day that he was made a stranger, neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah, in the day of their destruction:you should not have spoken proudly in the day of affliction.
1:13You should not have entered into the gate of my people, in the day of their destruction, neither should you have once looked on their affliction in the day of their destruction, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their destruction.
1:14Neither should you have stand in the cross ways to cut off them, that should escape, neither should you have shut up the remnant of it in the day of affliction.
1:15For the day of YHWH is near, upon all the heathen:as you have done, it shall be done to you:your reward shall return upon your head.
1:16For as you have drunk upon my holy Mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually:yes, they shall drink and swallow up,and they shall be as though they had not been.
1:17But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and it shall be holy, and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions,
1:18And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau as stubble, and they shall kindle in them and devour them:and there shall be no remnant of the house of Esau for YHWH has spoken it.
1:19And they shall possess the South side of the mount of Esau, and the plain of the Philistines:and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin shall have Gilead.
1:20And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel, which were among the Canaanites, shall possess to Zarephath, and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South.
1:21And they that shall save, shall come up to mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be YHWH's.
